The Mustard

The first major public appearance by Stanshawe Band after I joined was the West of England Area contest in March 1971 when we were to compete in the Second Section. It was felt to be important that the Band should present a good image on-stage as well as playing to a high standard; we decided therefore to purchase uniforms. In my young days in brass bands I had been impressed by Fishponds British Legion Band whose uniform, to the best of my recollection was black with mustard trim; I suggested this colour scheme to the Committee but with mustard jackets and black trim.

The suggestion found favour and we approached Lewis - the Military Tailors in Park Street [Bristol] to make the uniforms. They were delivered just in time for the Area Contest and the Band created quite a stir in both performance and appearance.
